about

DJ SOTOFETT releases four mini-albums digitally in August 2020. Following a 2006 experimental Wave-Edit project and Acid House collections from 2005 is a collaboration between DJ Sotofett, Osaruxo & Diskomo based on preparations and live recordings with synths/sequencers and violin for multipurpose venue Pool in Tokyo. All releases will be available on djsotofett.bandcamp.com before they later will be distributed on all digital download and streaming platforms.

POOL in Tokyo is a multipurpose space for music, experimental sound and performative art, and is located two floors underground in a quiet residential area of Nerima (Sakuradai Subway). The venue holds a workshop for Midi-Controlled iron robots, a hallway/bar/entrance area, and then through a well padded door – keep in mind it's in a basement – there's a surprisingly large main room with a high ceiling, sound system, video screening wall and a loft balcony(!) where the main mixing console is located.

Aonami, a GameBoy/LSDJ/8bit/nanoloop enthusiast, and one of my on-and-off collaborators since 2006, took me to Pool during my first Japan tour in 2014. Backtracking the memory bank tells me it was concerts organised by Threeplugs Records that night – loud, improvised, hard sonics – imagine a typically avant garde trio with effects and live experimentation covering traditional instruments.

The different qualities of locations is always of interest; the Finnmark tundra is to endlessly behold; most bridges has some sort of interesting parts below it's intentional pathway; climbing the Michigan Central Station is great if you're into graffiti and simply want to put a visible mark on both satellite images and Hollywood movies. While Tokyo and Japan offers endless (often very chic) locations for music, Pool is simply great for listening, and more importantly it's one of those capsules that invites one to do only things of pure interest.

When leaving Pool that night it took us a fraction of a second to share the same thoughts, and in 2015 we organised the first "Sex Tags Set-Up Tokyo". Owner of Pool, Biki, together with Aonami pushed the 8bit and loudness limits live, Vera Dvale presented a set of low volume field recordings, drones and music from the tradition of "deep listening", Yoshinori Hayashi from Going Good fame with whom I just finalised the impeccable "Waterwheel Scenery (DJ Sotofett's Dubcurve Fix Mix feat. Osaruxo)" played a leftfield DJ'set. And in 2015 I had already produced and recorded a full album consisting of violin only with Tokyo based Osaruxo (some of the music has been re-produced and released on the "Hebi/Haru" 10" EP on Honest Jon's Records) so it felt timely to start a live concert tradition with Osaruxo at Pool, "live improvisation with ambient and/or 8track dubbing" it's been called.

The following years Diskomo (organiser of BodyMeta parties and tours) joined the live constellation with mono & poly synths, and it's been a yearly tradition of the now trio to play live improvised concerts at Pool, while Aonami ends those nights with various 8bit concepts. Recordings of the 2018 concert have previously been released as the "Live At Pool" single on Sex Tags Amfibia – and this 10 track mini-album entitled "pool (は自由な発想で)" has extended excerpts from 2019's live concert, but also recordings from rehearsals and other studio sessions embodying this collaboration.

Revising the Pool live and rehearsal recordings easily revealed intriguing elements made during the "sonic tunnel vision" created while three people are playing two-till-four hour live stretches with only shared chemistry and brought equipment as a plan (I have put pride in using only small battery driven units for the concerts). These elements have been extracted, edited, overdubbed and remixed in various forms – coloured by the atmosphere of our nights at Pool – a venue that is a bed of soil, giving space for seeds to little by little find its places and grow.
